Richard Banks was born in 1776 at Gilling and baptised at Gilling Near Helmsley, Yorkshire on 4 July 1776. Richard was the son of John Banks 1743-1809 and Elizabeth Taylor 1750-1807.
At the age of 23 Richard married Elizabeth Hodgson on 28 February 1799 at Hovingham in Yorkshire.
Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hodgson 1748-1823 and Elizabeth Garbutt 1757-1838.
She was born in 1778 at Ampleforth in North Yorkshire and baptised on 6 December 1778 at nearby Oswaldkirk.
Richard was a farmer in Ampleforth, and after his death his son Robert continued farming on the same property (1841, 1851, 1861 census).
Richard and Elizabeth had a large family of 12 children –

Richard Banks died in 1831 in Ampleforth, Yorkshire aged 55 years. His wife Elizabeth Hodgson died in Fewb 1863 and was also buried at Ampleforth.
