Gawan Pickering was born in 1703 and baptised on 16 August 1703 at Allerston, Yorkshire, England, the son of Jeremiah Pickering 1671-1732 and Elizabeth Isobel Hovington 1684-1742.
Gawan Pickering married Mary Dickinson on 16 November 1725 at St Johns, Allerston, Yorkshire.
Mary was born in 1701 and baptised on 18 Jan 1701 at Brompton by Sawton, Yorkshire, the daughter of William Dickinson.
Gawan farmed the land at Crosscliffe, near Allerston, inYorkshire.
Gawan and Mary had four children –

- Gawin born 1730 died 1811 Allerston. Married Mary Simpson. 6 kids.
- Jeremiah born 1733 died 1810 Lockton. Headstone in Lockton.

After the death of his first wife Mary on 31 January 1743, with four young children to support, Gawan married again, to Margaret, surname unknown. Mary was buried at Allerston on 2 February 1743, and the burial register states she was the wife of Gawan.
Gawan died in January 1772 and was buried at Allerston on 29 January 1772, with the burial register describing him as a farmer. It is unknown when his wife Margaret died.
Gawan’s will written in 1770 leaves bequests to his wife Margaret, son in law William Harland, daughter Jane Harland, and two sons Thomas and Gawan.
