Andrew Jemson and Annie Wallace

Andrew Jemson was born on 16 May 1883 in Carlin How, Yorkshire to parents William Reed Jemson (1841-1890) and Priscilla Wraith (1846-1906).

Andrew’s father William was a foreman in the coal mines around Carlin How.

Andrew was baptised in the Carlin How Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on 13 June 1883.

It seems the Jemson family were non-conformists, breaking away from the traditional Church of England faith.

 

Andrew’s father William died in 1890 when he was just 7 years old leaving his mother Priscilla to bring up the four children (Mathew 1872-1950, William 1874-1959, Priscilla 1886-1970), so Priscilla moved in with her father Mathew Wraith, living in a small miners cottage. His other sister Priscilla had also died aged 9 in 1885.

By 1901, 17 year old Andrew was living with his mother Priscilla and her new husband, Joseph Easton (1834-1921), aged 67, a fellow bricklayer at the iron works, in Maynard Street, Carlin How. Also living with them was his sister Priscilla aged 14. His mother Priscilla had married Joseph in 1898. Joseph was also a widower with six grown up children.

 

Andrew, aged 21, was married to Annie Elizabeth Wallace, also aged 21, on 25 October 1904 at Christ Church Coatham.

His occupation was given as a bricklayer at Coatham.

Annie Elizabeth Wallace was the daughter of Joseph Wallace, an ironworker, and Jane Foster, and was born in Warrenby on 2 August 1884. She was baptised at Christ Church Coatham on 20 August 1884. Annie was one of six children born to Joseph and Jane.

Andrew and Annie had six children –

1. 1906 Andrew b Coatham d 1984 Redcar. Andrew married Ruth Paul and had two children Paul and Peter.
2. 1908 Barbara b Carlin How d 1975 Armadale, Victoria, Australia. Barbara married three times to – Robert Dennis, Albert Barrett and Clive Smith. Barbara and Robert had three children – Anne, Betty and Michael.
3. 1911 Violet (Sally) b Brotton 1911, d 2001 Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. Sally married Eric Nunn and had one adopted child Sylvia.
4. 1914 Thomas b Brotton d 1970 Halifax, England. Thomas married Doreen Rees.
5. 1916 Ruth b Brotton d 1987 Dormanstown, Redcar. Ruth married Donald Thomas and two children – Hazel and Andrew.
   1926 Jean b Brotton d 2017 Aylesbury, England. Jean married Ernest Walker and had four children – David, John, Ann and Jane. She later married Peter Parrish.

 

In 1911 Andrew and Annie were living at 16 Back Row Furnace Cottages in Carlin How with their two children Andrew aged 4 and Barbara aged 2. Andrew was working at the local blast furnace as a bricklayer.

Also in the house were Annie’s parents Jane (nee Foster) and her second husband Edward English and her two youngest sons from her first marriage Charles and James Wallace.

By the start of the war in 1939 the family were living at 75 Tod Point Road in Redcar. Andrew was still working in the blast furnace as a bricklayer as this was a reserved occupation.

Their married daughter Ruth Thomas was also living with them as her husband Donald was away serving in the war as a Lance Sergeant in the Royal Artillery.

Annie died on 5 September 1942 in 75 Tod Point Road, Warrenby aged 58. He is buried in the Coatham Christchurch Redcar cemetery.

Andrew died on 9 November 1956 aged 73 at 1 Lingdale Grove, Dormanstown, Redcar and is buried in the Coatham Christ Church Redcar Cemetery.
